    Summary

    Bladder carcinoma patients showed impaired monocyte function, crucial for immune response. Treatment with Bacillus Calmette-Guerin immunotherapy and surgery improved this immune cell function in patients with invasive cancer.

    Background:

    • Monocytes are key immune cells involved in fighting cancer.
    • Defective monocyte function may contribute to the body's inability to eliminate bladder tumors.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate alterations in monocyte function in patients with bladder carcinoma.
    • To determine if tumor stage correlates with monocyte dysfunction.

    Main Methods:

    • Evaluation of monocyte function in 39 patients with various stages of bladder carcinoma.
    • Assessment of monocyte chemotactic response before and after treatment.

    Main Results:

    • Patients with bladder carcinoma exhibited overall defective monocyte function.
    • No correlation was found between tumor stage and the degree of chemotactic defect.
    • Postoperative recovery showed a significant improvement in monocyte chemotactic response for patients with invasive carcinoma (p < 0.005).
    • Bacillus Calmette-Guerin immunotherapy led to improved monocyte function in 3 patients (p < 0.05).

    Conclusions:

    • Bladder carcinoma is associated with impaired monocyte function.
    • Surgical intervention and Bacillus Calmette-Guerin immunotherapy can restore monocyte function in these patients.
