Summary

Local gentamicin application showed no added benefit for bone formation with Bio-Oss and guided tissue regeneration (GTR). This study found no significant difference in bone fill between test and control groups over four months.

  • Guided tissue regeneration (GTR) aims to regenerate periodontal tissues.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the additive effect of local gentamicin on Bio-Oss-induced bone formation.
  • To evaluate gentamicin's role in conjunction with guided tissue regeneration (GTR).

Main Methods:

  • A rat mandibular model using a Teflon capsule system was employed.
  • Bio-Oss, with or without gentamicin, was placed within the capsule.
  • Histological analysis quantified bone formation at 1, 2, and 4 months.

  • Bone fill within the capsules increased over time in both groups.
  • No statistically significant difference in bone formation was observed between Bio-Oss with gentamicin and Bio-Oss alone.
  • Newly formed bone occupied approximately 12-13% of the capsule space after 4 months.

  • Local application of gentamicin does not enhance bone formation when used with Bio-Oss and GTR.
  • Gentamicin does not provide an additive osteogenic effect in this specific experimental model.
