This study reports two cases of postcaustic antropyloric stenosis treated surgically. Curative intervention 5-6 weeks post-ingestion is feasible without prior shunting, demonstrating effective management of severe caustic injuries.

    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Surgical Gastroenterology
    • Toxicology

    Background:

    • Postcaustic injury can lead to severe gastrointestinal complications such as antropyloric stenosis.
    • Timely surgical intervention is crucial for managing complete stenosis following caustic ingestion.

    Observation:

    • Two patients developed severe antropyloric stenosis 3 and 5 weeks after ingesting a caustic substance.
    • Surgical repair, involving antropylorectomy with Péan-Billroth type I gastroduodenoanastomosis, was performed 35 and 56 days post-ingestion.

    Findings:

    • Both patients demonstrated esophageal integrity and good anastomotic function post-surgery.
    • The clinical and radiological outcomes suggest that definitive surgical treatment is possible 5-6 weeks after the initial caustic ingestion.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Implications:

    • This approach may obviate the need for preliminary shunting procedures in select cases of postcaustic stenosis.
    • Early curative surgical intervention can lead to favorable outcomes in managing severe caustic-induced gastric outlet obstruction.
