Proinflammatory cytokine levels in hyperthyroidism

Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate serum levels of key osteotrophic cytokines in patients with various hyperthyroid states.
- To compare cytokine levels between hyperthyroid patients and euthyroid controls.
Main Methods:
- Serum samples were collected from 4 groups: Graves' disease (14), toxic nodular goitre (9), toxic multinodular goitre (27), and euthyroid controls (30).
- Levels of interleukin (IL)-1 beta, IL-6, IL-8, and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) were measured using the IMMULITE autoanalyzer with a chemiluminescence method.
Main Results:
- Significantly elevated serum IL-8 and TNF-alpha levels were observed in hyperthyroid patients compared to controls (p < 0.001 and p < 0.05, respectively).
- While IL-1 beta and IL-6 levels were higher in hyperthyroid patients, the differences were not statistically significant.
- Cytokine levels did not differ significantly between diffuse and nodular goitre types, nor between premenopausal and postmenopausal women with hyperthyroidism.
Conclusions:
- Increased circulating cytokine concentrations in hyperthyroidism suggest activation of systemic humoral responses.
- These findings may point to extra-thyroidal sources contributing to the inflammatory state in hyperthyroidism.
