Summary

Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP) affects both children and adults, with juvenile-onset RRP more common in females. CO2 laser therapy showed limited success in achieving complete remission for RRP patients.

Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Pediatric Otolaryngology
  • Respiratory Medicine

Background:

  • Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP) is a rare disease characterized by the growth of papillomas in the respiratory tract.
  • RRP can present in both children (juvenile-onset) and adults (adult-onset), with distinct clinical features and demographic profiles.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the clinical characteristics, treatment, and outcomes of patients with recurrent respiratory papillomatosis.
  • To compare juvenile-onset RRP with adult-onset RRP.

Main Methods:

  • A 6-year retrospective review of RRP patients treated between January 1996 and December 2001.
  • Data collected included patient demographics, clinical presentation, disease extent, and treatment modality (CO2 laser therapy).

Main Results:

  • Ten RRP cases were identified, with six being juvenile-onset.
  • Hoarseness was the most common symptom (90%). Juvenile-onset RRP was more prevalent in females and showed more extensive disease, including subglottic involvement.
  • CO2 laser therapy resulted in complete remission in only two patients, indicating limited efficacy.

Conclusions:

  • Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis presents with varied clinical manifestations, particularly differing between juvenile and adult-onset cases.
  • Current CO2 laser treatment for RRP demonstrates limited effectiveness in achieving complete remission, necessitating further research into alternative therapeutic strategies.
