Summary

Endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy (EDCR) is an effective treatment for nasolacrimal duct obstruction, showing excellent functional results with minimal complications in a recent review. This procedure offers a safe and efficient solution for patients experiencing persistent epiphora and dacryocystitis.

Background:

Nasolacrimal duct (NLD) obstruction causes persistent epiphora and can lead to recurrent dacryocystitis.
Endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy (EDCR) is a minimally invasive surgical approach to bypass NLD obstruction.

Purpose of the Study:

To review the indications, functional outcomes, and complications of endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy (EDCR) at a university hospital.
To evaluate the efficacy and safety of EDCR for treating unilateral nasolacrimal duct obstruction.

Main Methods:

A retrospective review of 11 patients who underwent EDCR between 1998 and 2001.
Data collected included indications for surgery, functional results, and any complications encountered.

Eleven patients with unilateral NLD obstruction underwent EDCR, with 10 procedures performed successfully.

Excellent functional results were achieved in 80% of patients, with significant reduction in epiphora for others.

Conclusions:

Endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy (EDCR) is an easy and efficient treatment for nasolacrimal duct obstruction.
The procedure demonstrates a high success rate and a low complication profile, making it a valuable therapeutic option.
