Summary

Bladder diverticula multiplicity is common, but cancer in multiple diverticula is rare. This case report suggests conservative management for non-cancerous bladder diverticula, questioning routine prophylactic diverticulectomy.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Bladder diverticula are common, with multiple diverticula frequently observed.
  • Malignancy within bladder diverticula is uncommon, with literature reporting few cases.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To present the first long-term follow-up of a remaining bladder diverticulum after treatment for cancer in another diverticulum.
  • To evaluate the necessity of prophylactic diverticulectomy for non-involved bladder diverticula.

Main Methods:

  • Case report detailing a patient with transitional cell carcinoma in one bladder diverticulum and a remaining contralateral diverticulum.
  • Long-term follow-up of the remaining bladder diverticulum post-partial cystectomy.

Main Results:

  • The remaining bladder diverticulum, not involved with cancer, showed no adverse developments during long-term follow-up.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The patient successfully managed without prophylactic removal of the contralateral diverticulum.
  • Conclusions:

    • Conservative management appears to be a viable option for bladder diverticula not associated with malignancy.
    • Routine prophylactic diverticulectomy may not be necessary in cases of bladder diverticular cancer.
