Pain assessment and management relating to an indwelling catheter

This care study describes and critically examines the nursing role in continence care and the management of pain using the Roper et al (2000) model as a framework. Current practice in pain management and care of a patient with an indwelling urinary catheter is evaluated against best practice suggested by recent research evidence. A multidimensional and multidisciplinary team approach was taken to alleviate pain and promote independence in catheter care. Imagination and a positive attitude led to greater patient comfort and dignity. Recommendations for evidence-based practice are made.
