Summary

The occurrence of placenta previa (a pregnancy complication) was compared between singleton and multiple gestations. Placenta previa complications were similar in both groups, indicating no significant difference.

Area of Science:

  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Maternal-Fetal Medicine
  • Perinatal Research

Background:

  • Placenta previa is a condition where the placenta partially or completely covers the cervix.
  • Understanding the incidence and characteristics of placenta previa in different gestation types is crucial for clinical management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the occurrence and complications of placenta previa in singleton versus multiple gestations.
  • To identify any unique risk factors or outcomes associated with placenta previa in multiple pregnancies.

Main Methods:

  • A historical cohort study was conducted.
  • Data were collected from deliveries at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center between 1997 and 2000.
  • Cases of placenta previa were analyzed in singleton and multiple gestations.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Placenta previa complicated 0.18% of singleton and 0.46% of multiple gestations (P =.09).
  • Maternal demographics, prior uterine surgery (excluding C-section), and gestational age at delivery were similar between groups.
  • Multiple gestations with placenta previa were more likely to have had a prior C-section (P <.001).
  • No differences were observed in the need for cesarean hysterectomy or blood transfusion.

Conclusions:

  • The occurrence of placenta previa does not significantly differ between singleton and multiple gestations.
  • Complications associated with placenta previa, such as the need for hysterectomy or transfusion, are comparable across gestation types.
