Area of Science:

  • Infectious Diseases
  • Gastroenterology
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Tuberculosis (TB) is a common infectious disease globally.
  • Gallbladder involvement by TB is exceptionally rare, with unclear reasons for mycobacterial resistance.
  • The pathogenesis of isolated gallbladder tuberculosis remains poorly understood.

Observation:

  • A case of gallbladder tuberculosis in a 64-year-old male is presented.
  • Imaging findings can mimic other gallbladder pathologies like cholecystitis or carcinoma.
  • This presentation is particularly rare in Western countries, with no reported cases since 1968.

Findings:

  • Gallbladder tuberculosis presents a diagnostic challenge due to its rarity and varied imaging characteristics.
  • Tuberculous cholecystitis requires consideration in the differential diagnosis of gallbladder lesions.
  • Tuberculin skin testing is a simple, cost-effective method for aiding diagnosis.

Implications:

  • Highlights the importance of considering rare diagnoses in clinical practice.
  • Emphasizes the need for prompt diagnosis and appropriate treatment of tuberculosis in unusual locations.
  • Underscores the value of diagnostic tools like tuberculin skin tests in specific clinical scenarios.
