Contact dermatitis to Shiitake mushroom.

Summary

Occupational allergic contact dermatitis can be caused by Shiitake mushrooms and other farm materials. Complete symptom resolution occurred after the patient stopped working in the mushroom farm environment.

Background:

Occupational allergic contact dermatitis (OACD) is a significant concern in various industries.
Mushroom farming involves exposure to biological materials like mushrooms and organic dusts, alongside chemicals such as thiuram.

Observation:

A 44-year-old woman developed chronic hand and face dermatitis over 8 months.
Her symptoms began after 2.5 years of employment at a mushroom farm.

Findings:

The patient was diagnosed with OACD attributed to Shiitake mushroom (Lentinus edodes), sawdust, and thiuram exposure.
Complete resolution of dermatitis symptoms was observed within 3 months of discontinuing farm work.

Implications:

This case highlights Shiitake mushroom and thiuram as potential occupational allergens in mushroom farming.
Early identification of allergens and removal from exposure are crucial for managing OACD.
Further research into allergens in agricultural settings is warranted to improve workplace safety.
