Summary

This study assessed removable partial denture (RPDs) effectiveness, finding that while most abutment teeth remained stable, upper jaw free-end areas had higher tooth loss. Overall, RPDs showed moderate long-term success in oral rehabilitation.

Background:

  • Removable partial dentures (RPDs) are a common solution for oral rehabilitation.
  • Evaluating the long-term effectiveness of RPDs is crucial for patient outcomes.
  • Cobalt-chromium frameworks were used for all RPDs in this study.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the long-term effectiveness of oral rehabilitation using removable partial dentures (RPDs).
  • To assess abutment tooth loss and other complications associated with RPDs.
  • To identify factors influencing the success or failure of RPDs.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 629 patients receiving cobalt-chromium RPDs between 1983 and 1994 was followed.
  • Clinical examinations were conducted on 254 patients who attended recall appointments (1998-2000).

    • Of 804 abutment teeth, 9.8% were lost; no significant difference was found between natural and crowned abutments.
    • Upper jaw free-end edentulous areas showed a significantly higher percentage of abutment loss compared to bounded areas.
    • 40 other teeth were lost, and 95 experienced caries or new fillings; cast clasp fractures occurred in 3.4% of RPDs.

    Conclusions:

    • Removable partial dentures (RPDs) demonstrate moderate long-term success in oral rehabilitation.
    • Abutment tooth loss is influenced by the type of edentulous area, particularly in the upper jaw.
    • Further research may be needed to optimize RPD design and patient management to minimize complications.
