Background:

To estimate key population genetic parameters such as evolutionary size, kinship, and inbreeding.

The census population size has averaged approximately 1400 over the last 500 years.
An effective migration rate of 3.05 per generation was estimated.
The evolutionary size was calculated at 638, with random kinship of 0.008 and inbreeding of 0.007 relative to Britain.

Conclusions:

Barra's population structure resembles other British isolates.
Barra exhibits significantly lower inbreeding compared to slash-and-burn agriculturalists and Pacific Islanders.
The findings have implications for understanding the distribution of rare genes and polymorphisms.
