Summary

Motion sickness (MS) can alter electrogastrography (EGG) patterns. This study found two types of tachygastria during MS: one associated with normal slow wave (NSW) changes and one without.

Background:

  • Electrogastrography (EGG) measures gastric electrical activity.
  • Motion sickness (MS) is associated with changes in EGG dominant frequency.
  • The fate of normal slow waves (NSW) during MS remains unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate changes in NSW during motion sickness using vector analysis of EGG.
  • To differentiate types of tachygastria associated with MS.

Main Methods:

  • Fourteen subjects underwent Coriolis stimulation to induce MS.
  • EGG was recorded using perpendicular bipolar leads (x and y axes).
  • Vector analysis was used to analyze EGG trajectories, comparing NSW amplitude and phase before, during, and after stimulation.

  • Two distinct patterns of tachygastria were identified in relation to NSW.
  • In subjects with phase difference changes, NSW and tachygastria were negatively correlated (P = -0.048).
  • In subjects without phase difference changes, NSW and tachygastria were not correlated.

  • Motion sickness can induce tachygastria with or without alterations in normal slow waves.
  • Vector analysis of EGG provides insights into the complex gastric responses during MS.
