    Summary

Post-carotid endarterectomy headaches are rare but typically vascular and self-resolving within months. This case highlights a typical, albeit infrequent, complication following carotid surgery.

    Area of Science:

    • Neurology
    • Vascular Surgery

    Background:

    • Carotid endarterectomy is a surgical procedure to remove plaque from the carotid artery.
    • Headache is a rare complication following carotid endarterectomy.

    Observation:

    • A patient developed severe, throbbing headaches behind the right eye, radiating to the temple and forehead, 48 hours post-operation.
    • Headache attacks lasted 4-8 hours daily for three weeks before gradually decreasing.

    Findings:

    • The patient's headaches resolved completely within two months.
    • Postoperative headaches after carotid endarterectomy are typically vascular and self-limiting, resolving within 1-6 months.

    Implications:

    • The rarity of this complication suggests other factors may be involved beyond typical vascular responses.
    • Further research is needed to understand the precise etiology and predisposing factors for headaches post-carotid endarterectomy.
