A 46-year-old man with chronic idiopathic urticaria found relief with a higher dose of cetirizine. He experienced no sedation, demonstrating effective symptom management without common side effects.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Chronic idiopathic urticaria (CIU) is a common condition characterized by recurrent hives.
  • Antihistamines are the first-line treatment for CIU, but some patients do not achieve adequate symptom control or experience side effects.

Observation:

  • A 46-year-old male patient with CIU was treated with cetirizine at a dosage of 50 mg daily.
  • Previous treatments with fexofenadine, loratadine, and hydroxyzine were ineffective for this patient.

Findings:

  • The patient tolerated the 50 mg daily dose of cetirizine without experiencing sedation or somnolence.
  • Routine daily activities, including driving, were not impaired by the medication.

Implications:

  • Higher doses of cetirizine may be a viable option for patients with CIU refractory to standard antihistamine treatments.

Related Experiment Videos

  • This case suggests that cetirizine, even at higher doses, may offer a favorable safety profile regarding sedation and cognitive function.
