Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Public Health
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Examined mortality trends for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) over several decades.
  • Included comparative data from Europe, the USA, and Japan.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze historical trends in BPH-related mortality.
  • To compare mortality rates across different developed regions.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized World Health Organisation database for cancer death certification data.
  • Focused on data related to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

Main Results:

  • Overall BPH mortality in the European Union (EU) declined by over 96% from the early 1950s to the late 1990s.
  • The USA and Japan showed comparable declines, with lower rates than the EU by the late 1990s.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Eastern Europe exhibited downward BPH mortality trends but maintained rates approximately fourfold higher than the EU.
  • Conclusions:

    • Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) mortality rates have consistently decreased in developed countries.
    • Excess BPH mortality in Eastern Europe highlights opportunities for further mortality reduction.
