    Area of Science:

    • Public Health
    • Epidemiology
    • Infectious Diseases

    Background:

    • Extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) poses a significant global health challenge.
    • Understanding regional EPTB trends is crucial for targeted interventions.

    Observation:

    • Analysis of 973 EPTB cases across 14 West Siberian regions.
    • Data collected from statistical reports supervised by the Novosibirsk Research Institute of Tuberculosis.

    Findings:

    • In 1999, EPTB incidence in Siberia was 29.95 per 100,000 population.
    • EPTB mortality increased to 4.4 cases per 100,000.
    • Urogenital tuberculosis was the most common cause of EPTB mortality, followed by peripheral lymph nodal and osteoarticular tuberculosis.

    Implications:

    • The findings highlight the persistent burden of EPTB in Siberia.
    • Advanced and complicated cases of EPTB continue to be diagnosed.
    • Public health strategies may need to address specific EPTB forms, particularly urogenital tuberculosis.
