Abdominal tuberculosis (AT) is a rare intraabdominal infection. Diagnosis is challenging, and surgery should be limited to sampling to avoid complications, as chemotherapy is effective.

Area of Science:

  • Infectious Diseases
  • Gastroenterology
  • Surgical Pathology

Background:

  • Abdominal tuberculosis (AT) presents as a rare cause of intraabdominal infection.
  • Surgical intervention for AT is typically reserved for diagnosis or managing complications.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review surgical interventions for abdominal tuberculosis.
  • To evaluate the role of surgery in diagnosing and managing AT.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of medical records for 14 patients diagnosed with AT between 1983 and 2000.
  • Surgical procedures included laparotomy and diagnostic laparoscopy for tissue and fluid sampling.

Main Results:

  • The median age of patients was 7 years, with common symptoms including abdominal pain, weight loss, and mass.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Surgical indications included intestinal obstruction, abdominal mass, psoas abscess, and intussusception.
  • Histopathological and microbiological examinations confirmed AT; most patients survived with antituberculous therapy.
  • Conclusions:

    • Diagnosing AT pre-complication is difficult.
    • Aggressive surgery should be avoided due to excellent chemotherapy response.
    • Initial surgical intervention should focus on tissue and fluid sampling for diagnosis.
