Serum hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) was higher in hypertensive postmenopausal women. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) reduced HGF levels in hypertensive women but did not affect blood pressure.

  • Postmenopausal women (PMW) represent a demographic with potential cardiovascular risks.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if serum HGF levels differ between hypertensive and normotensive PMW.
  • To investigate the impact of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) on serum HGF and blood pressure in these groups.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective observational study involving 33 hypertensive and 23 normotensive PMW.
  • Participants received 12 months of continuous HRT (conjugated equine estrogen and medroxyprogesterone acetate).
  • Serum HGF levels and blood pressure were measured at baseline and after 12 months.

  • Baseline serum HGF was significantly higher in hypertensive PMW compared to normotensive PMW.
  • HRT significantly decreased serum HGF in hypertensive PMW (2.85 to 2.49 pmol/l, P < 0.001).

Conclusions:

  • Elevated serum HGF is associated with hypertension in postmenopausal women.
  • HRT effectively lowers serum HGF in hypertensive PMW, independent of blood pressure changes.
  • The HGF-lowering effect of HRT is more pronounced in hypertensive PMW.
