Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Surgical Techniques
  • Glaucoma Surgery

Background:

  • Trabeculectomy is a common glaucoma surgery.
  • Circumferential conjunctival blebs are an uncommon complication of trabeculectomy.
  • Symptomatic blebs can cause discomfort and affect vision.

Observation:

  • A novel surgical technique, bleb-limiting conjunctivoplasty, was performed on four eyes of two patients.
  • The procedure involved radial conjunctival and Tenon incisions sutured to the sclera.
  • A corneal traction suture facilitated conjunctival exposure.

Findings:

  • Immediate flattening of the conjunctiva and no elevation in intraocular pressure were observed postoperatively.
  • Patients reported rapid symptom improvement with no immediate complications.

Related Experiment Videos

  • One case of recurrence was successfully managed with a repeat procedure.
  • Implications:

    • Bleb-limiting conjunctivoplasty appears to be an effective treatment for symptomatic circumferential blebs post-trabeculectomy.
    • This technique offers a potential solution for managing this specific complication.
    • Further studies may validate its long-term efficacy and applicability.
