Summary

Patients with primary osteosarcoma who developed a second bone tumor (metachronous osteosarcoma) did not develop lung metastases. This suggests a potentially favorable prognosis for osteosarcoma patients without pulmonary involvement.

Background:

  • Osteosarcoma is a primary bone cancer.
  • Metachronous tumors develop at a distant site after the primary cancer treatment.
  • Pulmonary metastases are a common complication of osteosarcoma.

Observation:

  • Five patients with primary osteosarcoma were treated with chemotherapy and surgery.
  • These patients subsequently developed a second, distinct osteosarcoma at a different bone site.
  • None of the patients showed evidence of lung metastases throughout their follow-up.

Findings:

  • Patients with metachronous osteosarcoma, despite developing a second primary tumor, did not develop pulmonary metastases.
  • Long-term follow-up revealed no local tumor recurrence in most patients.
