Background:

  • Parkinson's disease (PD) is associated with sleep disturbances.
  • Sudden, irresistible sleep episodes while driving (sleep attacks) are a concern in PD patients.
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is a common symptom in PD, potentially exacerbated by dopaminergic medications.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the frequency of EDS and its relationship with sleep episodes while driving (SE) in Parkinson's disease patients.
  • To identify predictors of SE in PD patients.

Main Methods:

  • A questionnaire-based study evaluating 101 consecutive PD patients and 100 age-matched controls.
  • Inclusion of subjective sleepiness estimates, the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), and data on disease severity and dopaminergic medication.

    Conclusions:

    • Sleep episodes while driving in Parkinson's disease are significantly associated with excessive daytime sleepiness and dopaminergic medication load.
    • Physicians should counsel PD patients about the risks of EDS and SE while driving.
    • Management strategies should address EDS and medication adjustments in PD patients.
