Insights
Behçet's syndrome can lead to acute coronary syndrome and complications after percutaneous coronary intervention. Increased oxidative stress during active Behçet's syndrome may cause myocardial infarction and in-stent reocclusion.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Rheumatology
- Vascular Medicine
Background:
- Behçet's syndrome is a rare multisystem inflammatory disease.
- Vascular involvement is a significant complication of Behçet's syndrome.
- Coronary artery disease is an uncommon but serious manifestation.
Observation:
- This case report details a patient with Behçet's syndrome who experienced acute coronary syndrome.
- The patient also developed a complication following percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).
- The complication involved late in-stent reocclusion.
Findings:
- An active phase of Behçet's syndrome may predispose to cardiovascular events.
- Increased oxidative stress and reduced nitric oxide availability are potential mechanisms.
- These mechanisms could explain both early myocardial infarction and late in-stent reocclusion post-PCI.
Implications:
- Behçet's syndrome requires careful cardiovascular monitoring.
- Understanding the pathophysiology may guide treatment strategies for cardiovascular complications.
- Management of these complications in Behçet's syndrome patients can be challenging.
Abstract:
The present case report describes the occurrence of an acute coronary syndrome and of a post-percutaneous coronary intervention complication in a patient with Behçet's syndrome. An active phase of this syndrome, through an increased oxidative stress and reduced nitric oxide availability, could explain both an early myocardial infarction as well as an infarction following late in-stent reocclusion. This complication can be very difficult to treat.
