This study presents a novel surgical technique using rotated hemiphiltrum flaps to repair large philtrum defects. The procedure offers excellent cosmetic and functional outcomes with minimal scarring for upper lip reconstruction.

Area of Science:

  • Plastic Surgery
  • Reconstructive Surgery

Background:

  • Large surgical defects of the philtrum present significant reconstructive challenges.
  • Previous methods may result in visible scarring or contour deformities.

Observation:

  • Three patients of varying ages underwent repair of extensive philtrum resections.
  • A novel technique utilizing rotated island flaps from the residual philtrum was employed.

Findings:

  • The rotated hemiphiltrum flap technique resulted in inconspicuous scars.
  • No contour deformity was observed post-operatively.
  • The procedure was performed under local anesthesia, demonstrating ease and safety.

Implications:

  • This technique offers an effective cosmetic and functional solution for specific central upper lip defects.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The rotated hemiphiltrum flap is a viable option for challenging philtrum reconstructions.
  • Further application in reconstructive surgery is warranted.
