Insights
This case study highlights a rare coronary artery anomaly where all three vessels originated from a single opening. This unusual anatomy was discovered during angiography for myocardial infarction.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Vascular Anatomy
- Interventional Cardiology
Background:
- Coronary artery anomalies are congenital variations in the anatomy of the heart's major arteries.
- Anomalous origin of coronary arteries can predispose individuals to myocardial infarction and sudden cardiac death.
- Inferior myocardial infarction is often linked to atherosclerosis but can be influenced by anatomical variations.
Observation:
- A patient presented with inferior myocardial infarction, necessitating coronary angiography.
- During the procedure, significant atherosclerotic lesions were identified in the coronary arteries.
- A rare anatomical finding revealed all three coronary arteries (left main, left anterior descending, and left circumflex) arising from a single ostium within the left sinus of Valsalva.
Findings:
- The primary finding was the extremely rare single ostial origin of all three coronary arteries from the left sinus of Valsalva.
- This anomalous origin coexisted with significant atherosclerotic disease, contributing to the myocardial infarction.
- The anatomical variation presented a diagnostic and potentially therapeutic challenge.
Implications:
- This case underscores the importance of recognizing rare coronary artery anomalies during cardiac investigations.
- Understanding such variations is crucial for accurate diagnosis and risk stratification in patients with coronary artery disease.
- Further research into the clinical significance and management strategies for single ostial coronary artery origins is warranted.
Abstract:
The authors report the case of a patient undergoing coronary angiography for an inferior myocardial infarction related with atherosclerosic lesions but associated with a rare anomalous origin of all three coronary arteries from single ostia in the left sinus of valsalva.
