Symptomatic upper extremity deep venous thrombosis (DVT) is relatively common in hospitalized patients. However, no cases of pulmonary embolism (PE) were observed in patients treated with anticoagulants.

Area of Science:

  • Vascular Medicine
  • Diagnostic Imaging
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Deep venous thrombosis (DVT) typically affects the lower extremities.
  • Upper extremity DVT (UEDVT) is less common but can have significant morbidity.
  • Understanding the prevalence and outcomes of UEDVT is crucial for patient management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of symptomatic UEDVT in a community teaching hospital.
  • To investigate the association between symptomatic UEDVT and symptomatic acute pulmonary embolism (PE).

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective evaluation of UEDVT cases over a 2-year period.
  • Patient identification using ICD-9 codes and review of imaging studies (ultrasonography, venography, MRA).

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Symptomatic UEDVT occurred in 0.15% of all patients (0.19% of adults).
  • No symptomatic PE was observed in patients with UEDVT.
  • Common risk factors included central lines (60%) and cancer (46%).

Conclusions:

  • Symptomatic UEDVT is not uncommon in hospitalized individuals.
  • Anticoagulant therapy appeared effective in preventing PE in this UEDVT cohort.
