Summary

Younger age, male gender, and myopia increase the risk of hypotony maculopathy. Conversely, a history of diabetes and choroidal effusion appear protective against this condition.

Chronic Hypotony After Tube Shunt Surgery: A Pooled Analysis of Data From Three Randomized Clinical Trials.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the risk factors associated with the development of hypotony maculopathy.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective case-control study involving 228 patients with hypotony.
  • Intraocular pressure (IOP) below 5 mmHg defined hypotony.
  • Hypotony maculopathy cases had retinal or choroidal folds; controls had hypotony alone.

Main Results:

  • Younger age (mean 50.5 vs 70.6 years) and male gender (54.3% vs 33.6%) were associated with hypotony maculopathy.
  • Myopia (refractive error -3.02 D) was a risk factor in phakic eyes.
  • Absence of choroidal effusion (21% vs 52.4%) and no history of diabetes predicted hypotony maculopathy development.

Conclusions:

  • Young age, male gender, and myopia are significant risk factors for hypotony maculopathy.
  • Diabetes history and choroidal effusion presence are associated with a decreased risk.
