Summary

Pseudomeningoceles, rare after lumbar surgery, are cerebrospinal fluid collections from dural tears. This case shows a unique pseudomeningocele within the L5 spinous process over 10 years.

Area of Science:

  • Neurosurgery
  • Spinal Surgery
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Pseudomeningoceles are infrequent complications following lumbar spine surgery.
  • They arise extradurally from incidental dural tears, forming encapsulated cerebrospinal fluid collections.
  • Typically, these collections are found in the paraspinal region, sometimes extending to the subcutaneous tissue.

Observation:

  • This report details a rare case of a postlaminectomy pseudomeningocele.
  • The pseudomeningocele developed over a decade within the L5 spinous process.
  • Remarkably, the collection remained entirely contained within the bony confines of the spinous process.

Findings:

  • A 10-year evolution of a pseudomeningocele within the L5 spinous process was observed.
  • The pseudomeningocele was fully encased by bone, deviating from typical presentations.

Related Experiment Videos

  • This finding highlights an unusual anatomical localization for pseudomeningocele formation.
  • Implications:

    • This case presents unique surgical considerations for managing intraspinal pathology.
    • Understanding the potential for extradural fluid collections to develop within bony structures is crucial.
    • Further investigation into the biomechanics and surgical management of such contained pseudomeningoceles is warranted.
