In aortic stenosis, women showed higher pressures and stress but a trend towards less left ventricular (LV) mass increase compared to men. LV pump function remained normal in both genders.

  • Aortic stenosis (AS) causes left ventricular (LV) systolic overload.
  • The hypertrophic response to AS may differ between genders.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate gender-specific differences in LV function in patients with isolated severe AS.

Main Methods:

  • 145 patients (65 women, 80 men) with severe AS (aortic valve area <0.8 cm2) underwent cardiac catheterization.
  • Exclusion criteria included diabetes, hypertension, and other cardiac/valve diseases.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences in aortic valve area or LV volumes/mass between genders.
  • Women exhibited higher transaortic gradient, LV peak systolic pressure, and cardiac index.

  • Conclusions:

    • Despite similar hemodynamics, women trended towards a less compensatory increase in LV mass.
