Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Vascular Medicine
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) presents with diverse clinical symptoms and varied causes.
  • Galen vein thrombosis (GVT) is an uncommon form of CVT, often linked to vascular malformations.

Observation:

  • A 16-year-old female presented with GVT.
  • The patient's GVT occurred without any detectable vascular malformation.
  • The condition was concurrently associated with straight sinus thrombosis and venous thalamic infarct.

Findings:

  • This case demonstrates a rare instance of GVT without vascular malformation.
  • The co-occurrence of straight sinus thrombosis and venous thalamic infarct alongside GVT is noted.
  • Diagnostic considerations for CVT, including clinical, radiological, and laboratory aspects, are discussed.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • This case expands the understanding of GVT etiology and presentation.
  • It underscores the importance of considering GVT in young patients with CVT, even in the absence of vascular malformations.
  • Highlights the diagnostic challenges and comprehensive evaluation required for complex CVT cases.
