Summary

This study reports two cases of retrocaval ureter, a rare condition where the ureter passes behind the inferior vena cava. Surgical correction successfully resolved flank pain, hematuria, and hydronephrosis in both patients.

Background:

Observation:

  • Two patients, a 22-year-old male and a 2-year-old child, presented with symptoms of retrocaval ureter.
  • Symptoms included flank pain, hematuria, and moderate hydronephrosis.

Findings:

  • Diagnosis was confirmed using intravenous urography and retrograde pyelography.
  • Surgical management involved transecting and anastomosing the ureter anterior to the inferior vena cava over a JJ stent.
  • Both patients experienced symptom resolution and improved hydronephrosis post-surgery.

Implications:

  • Surgical correction of retrocaval ureter is effective.
