Summary

Elevated synaptosomal associated protein, 25 kDa (SNAP-25) in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is linked to schizophrenia. Higher SNAP-25 levels correlated with symptom severity in patients treated with haloperidol.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate SNAP-25 levels in relation to clinical variables in a new cohort of schizophrenia subjects.
  • To confirm previous findings of elevated CSF SNAP-25 in schizophrenia.

Main Methods:

  • Studied 25 chronic schizophrenia patients (haloperidol treatment) and 25 healthy controls.
  • Measured CSF SNAP-25 levels and psychiatric symptoms (Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale - BPRS) during haloperidol treatment and after 6 weeks of placebo.
  • Performed lumbar punctures for CSF collection under both treatment conditions.
