1Center for the Study of Aging and Human Development, Department of Medicine, Duke University Medical Center, Durham, North Carolina 27710, USA.
Abstract:
Nursing homes and their residents are being called upon with increasing frequency to participate in research regarding Alzheimer's disease and related conditions. Because of this trend, it is important that medical directors take an active role in reviewing research protocols to ensure that the rights of nursing home residents are protected and to recognize the impact the study will have on staff and residents. This article reviews the past abuses of institutional subjects in research, present regulations designed to protect participants, and issues regarding research that are unique to the nursing home setting.
