Primary mediastinal ectopic goiters are rare. This case report details the successful surgical removal of a mediastinal ectopic goiter using a transternal approach due to its thoracic blood supply.

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Thoracic Surgery
  • Surgical Pathology

Background:

  • Ectopic goiters, particularly primary mediastinal presentations, are exceedingly rare anatomical variations.
  • Thyroid tissue located outside the normal thyroid gland, such as in the mediastinum, presents unique diagnostic and therapeutic challenges.

Observation:

  • A rare case of a primary mediastinal ectopic goiter was identified.
  • The goiter exhibited a significant blood supply originating from thoracic vessels.

Findings:

  • Surgical management necessitated a transternal approach for complete resection.
  • The transternal approach provided adequate exposure and facilitated the safe removal of the ectopic goiter.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • This case highlights the importance of considering ectopic goiters in mediastinal masses.
  • A transternal approach can be a viable and effective surgical strategy for managing complex mediastinal ectopic goiters with thoracic vascular supply.
