A rare case of scrotal abscess caused by appendicitis is presented. Prompt abdominal imaging is crucial for diagnosing retroperitoneal abscesses following appendectomy to guide effective treatment.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Surgical Pathology

Background:

  • Appendicitis can present with urologic symptoms, but scrotal abscess is an uncommon manifestation.
  • Retroperitoneal abscesses secondary to appendicitis can lead to unusual clinical presentations.

Observation:

  • A patient developed a progressive right scrotal abscess after appendectomy for retrocecal appendicitis.
  • Initial scrotal exploration for presumed epididymo-orchitis did not resolve the patient's symptoms.

Findings:

  • Abdominal computerized tomography revealed a large retroperitoneal abscess at the appendectomy site.
  • Percutaneous drainage of the retroperitoneal abscess led to the resolution of the scrotal abscess.

Implications:
