Summary

Allergic contact dermatitis from cell phones is linked to chromium. This study found 8 patients with ear and face rashes tested positive for chromium exposure from their phones.

Background:

  • Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) from electronic devices is an emerging concern.
  • Previous reports have linked ACD to hexavalent chromium plating on cell phones.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the clinical features and patch test results in patients experiencing contact dermatitis potentially caused by cell phone use.
  • To identify the causative agents in cell phone-related allergic reactions.

Main Methods:

  • Eight patients (4 male, 4 female; ages 14-54) with suspected cell phone-induced dermatitis were evaluated.
  • Clinical presentation included erythema and papules, primarily on the auricle and preauricular areas.
  • Patch testing and photopatch testing were conducted using standard metal antigens, including potassium dichromate, cobalt chloride, and nickel sulfate.

Main Results:

  • All 8 patients showed positive patch test reactions to potassium dichromate (0.5%, 0.1%, and 0.05%).
  • Photopatch tests yielded identical positive results for potassium dichromate.
  • One patient reacted to cobalt chloride (2%) and another to nickel sulfate (5%).

Conclusions:

  • Cell phone-induced contact dermatitis, particularly from chromium plating, should be considered in patients presenting with auricular or preauricular erythema and papules.
  • Patch testing is crucial for identifying specific metal allergens in suspected cases.
  • Awareness of potential allergens in consumer electronics is important for diagnosis and prevention.
