Summary

Radiation therapy alters vertebral bone marrow MR imaging findings, showing increased signal intensity on T1WI and T2WI. These changes are attributed to fatty infiltration following irradiation treatment.

Area of Science:

  • Radiology
  • Oncology
  • Bone Marrow Imaging

Background:

  • Radiation therapy is a common cancer treatment.
  • Understanding its effects on bone marrow is crucial for monitoring patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate Magnetic Resonance (MR) imaging changes in vertebral bone marrow after radiation therapy.
  • To correlate imaging findings with irradiation parameters.

Main Methods:

  • Studied 55 subjects undergoing irradiation treatment.
  • Analyzed MR images (T1WI, T2WI, STIR/fat-suppressed T1WI) at varying intervals post-radiotherapy.
  • Irradiation dosage ranged from 2100 to 7500 cGy.

Main Results:

  • Increased signal intensity in bone marrow on T1-weighted images (T1WI) and T2-weighted images (T2WI).
  • Altered signal intensity areas showed well-defined margins corresponding to the radiation field.
  • Decreased signal intensity observed on STIR or fat-suppressed T1WI sequences.

Conclusions:

  • MR signal intensity changes in bone marrow post-radiation are secondary to fatty infiltration.
  • These findings represent the replacement of normal bone marrow by increased yellow bone marrow.
