  • Gastrointestinal Surgery
  • Surgical Outcomes

Background:

  • Retrospective analysis of 2000 laparoscopic cholecystectomy cases.
  • Study conducted at a single surgical center.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Evaluate the outcomes of laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
  • Assess the safety and efficacy of the procedure.

Main Methods:

  • 2000 patients with symptomatic gallstones underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
  • Diagnosis confirmed by abdominal ultrasonography.
  • Four-trocar technique utilized in most cases.

Main Results:

  • Mean operative time was 45 minutes.
  • Conversion to open cholecystectomy occurred in 7.35% of cases, primarily due to adhesions.

  • Other complications included bile leakage (0.55%) and hemorrhage (0.45%).
  • Conclusions:

    • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a viable alternative to open surgery.
    • The procedure demonstrates acceptable morbidity.
    • Judicious conversion to open cholecystectomy is crucial for preventing major complications.
