Summary

Identifying risk factors for hospitalization in kidney transplant recipients is crucial. Donor cytomegalovirus (CMV)-positive status and longer initial hospital stays increase risk, while better graft function and time since transplant reduce it.

Area of Science:

  • Nephrology
  • Transplant Surgery
  • Immunology

Background:

  • Hospitalization significantly impacts end-stage renal disease (ESRD) programs, particularly for kidney transplant recipients.
  • Identifying patients at high risk for increased resource utilization can inform interventions to mitigate kidney transplant complications and reduce costs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify risk factors associated with hospital utilization in kidney transplant recipients.
  • To inform targeted interventions for improving clinical and economic outcomes in this population.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective cohort study of kidney transplant recipients followed in an outpatient clinic.
  • Analysis of patient data from October 1990 to September 1999 to identify risk factors for hospital utilization.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Infection was the leading cause of hospitalization (78% of patients hospitalized).
  • Donor cytomegalovirus (CMV)-positive status and longer initial transplant hospitalization increased hospitalization risk.
  • Higher serum albumin, hematocrit, glomerular filtration rate (GFR), and longer time since transplant were associated with lower hospitalization risk.

Conclusions:

  • Identifying specific risk factors for increased resource utilization is key.
  • Targeted interventions based on these risk factors can improve outcomes for kidney transplant recipients.
