Summary

Remote abscess formation is a rare complication of interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) treatment for chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Clinicians should suspect abscesses in patients with unexplained fever during IFN-alpha therapy.

Background:

  • Interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) is used to treat chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection.

  • Three cases of remote abscesses were observed in 68 patients undergoing IFN-alpha treatment for chronic viral hepatitis.

  • Fever and constitutional symptoms are common side effects, potentially masking abscesses.
