Summary

Extracellular neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) interact with microglia and astrocytes. These ghost tangles undergo structural changes and may be discharged into vessels or formed within astrocytic end-feet.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Cell Biology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) are key pathological hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease.
  • The extracellular presence and cellular interactions of NFTs are not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the cellular interactions and extracellular fate of neurofibrillary tangles.
  • To explore potential structural and immunocytochemical modifications of extracellular NFTs.

Main Methods:

  • Electron microscopy was utilized to observe NFTs in the vascular region.
  • Immunocytochemical analysis was performed to assess modifications.

Main Results:

  • Extracellular NFTs were observed to be associated with microglia.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Astrocytic processes were seen invading the extracellular NFTs.
  • Electron microscopy revealed NFTs potentially being discharged into blood vessels or formed within astrocytic end-feet.
  • Conclusions:

    • Extracellular NFTs undergo significant cellular interactions and modifications.
    • The vascular system may play a role in the clearance or formation of NFTs.
