Summary

Onychomycosis (fungal nail infection) is more common in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients. Trichophyton rubrum was the most frequent cause, with toenails most affected.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of onychomycosis in patients with SLE.
  • To describe the clinical presentations and causative organisms of onychomycosis in SLE patients.
  • To compare these findings with a control group.

Main Methods:

  • Fifty SLE patients and 50 age- and sex-matched controls were recruited.
  • Nail samples were collected from patients with abnormal nails exhibiting various clinical forms of onychomycosis.

    • Onychomycosis was confirmed in 24% of SLE patients, significantly higher than the 8% in controls (p=0.029).

    • Systemic lupus erythematosus patients exhibit a higher prevalence of onychomycosis compared to controls.
    • Trichophyton rubrum is the primary fungal pathogen responsible for onychomycosis in this SLE cohort.
    • Proximal subungual onychomycosis (PSO), a rare form in immunocompetent individuals, was exclusively observed in SLE patients.
