Summary

Basosquamous carcinoma (BSC) shows similar local invasion to basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). However, BSC has a significantly higher rate of distant metastasis, particularly to the lungs.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Basosquamous carcinoma (BSC) is a rare cutaneous tumor with limited literature.
  • BSC is often characterized as aggressive with a high propensity for distant metastasis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Compare local tissue invasion and metastasis rates of BSC against basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC).

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 1000 consecutive Mohs surgery cases (1993-1995) for BCC, SCC, and BSC.
  • Evaluation included tumor type, location, Mohs stages, and metastasis presence via chest radiograph.

Main Results:

  • 27 BSCs, 745 BCCs, and 228 SCCs were analyzed.
  • BSC required more Mohs stages (2.00) compared to BCC (1.62) and SCC (1.51).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Metastasis prevalence was 7.4% for BSC versus 0.87% for SCC (P<0.001).
  • Conclusions:

    • BSCs exhibit local invasion comparable to BCC and SCC.
    • BSCs demonstrate a significantly higher frequency of pulmonary metastasis than SCC.
