Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate respiratory changes and sleep patterns during late pregnancy and the postpartum period.
  • To compare the frequency of sleep-related apneas and hypopneas between pregnancy and postpartum.
  • To assess maternal arterial oxygen levels (PaO2) during sleep in both periods.

Main Methods:

  • Complete polysomnography was performed on 11 pregnant women at 36 weeks gestation and again postpartum.

    Conclusions:

    • Despite fewer breathing disturbances during pregnancy, maternal oxygen levels during sleep are lower compared to the postpartum period.
    • Pregnancy-related respiratory adaptations may lead to reduced oxygenation during sleep, independent of sleep-disordered breathing events.
    • Further research is needed to understand the clinical implications of these findings for maternal and fetal health.
