Summary

Interferon alpha-2b showed a significant tumor response in a patient with alveolar soft-part sarcoma, even after treatment cessation due to psychosis. This suggests potential efficacy for this rare cancer treatment.

Annals of oncology : official journal of the European Society for Medical Oncology·2010

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Medical Research

Background:

  • Alveolar soft-part sarcoma (ASPS) is a rare and aggressive soft tissue sarcoma.
  • Metastatic ASPS often shows resistance to conventional chemotherapy.

Observation:

  • A case study of a 23-year-old woman with metastatic ASPS of the calf is presented.
  • The patient's tumor was unresponsive to standard chemotherapy regimens.

Findings:

  • Treatment with interferon (IFN) alpha-2b resulted in a remarkable and ongoing tumor response.
  • The positive anti-tumor effect persisted even after IFN discontinuation due to induced psychosis.

Implications:

  • Interferon alpha-2b may represent a potential therapeutic option for advanced alveolar soft-part sarcoma.

  • Further research is warranted to understand the mechanism of IFN's efficacy and manage its side effects.
