  • Natural Products Chemistry
  • Mycology

Background:

  • Leandra chaetodon is a plant species with potential medicinal properties.
  • Triterpenes are a class of naturally occurring compounds with diverse biological activities.
  • Cryptococcus neoformans is a fungus that can cause serious infections.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To isolate and characterize chemical compounds from Leandra chaetodon.
  • To evaluate the antifungal activity of isolated compounds against Cryptococcus neoformans.

Main Methods:

  • Ethanol extraction of the whole plant of Leandra chaetodon.
  • Isolation of compounds using chromatographic techniques.
  • Structure elucidation of the new compound using spectroscopic analysis (e.g., NMR, MS).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Antifungal activity assay against Cryptococcus neoformans.
  • Main Results:

    • A new triterpene compound, identified as 2alpha,6alpha-dihydroxybetulinic acid (1), was isolated.
    • Arjunolic acid was also isolated from the plant extract.
    • Arjunolic acid exhibited inhibitory activity against Cryptococcus neoformans with a half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of 20 micrograms/mL.

    Conclusions:

    • Leandra chaetodon is a source of bioactive triterpenes.
    • Arjunolic acid possesses antifungal properties relevant to combating Cryptococcus neoformans infections.
    • Further investigation into the medicinal potential of Leandra chaetodon and its constituents is warranted.
