A second renaissance

This piece was written to mark the first anniversary of 11 September 2001. Inspections for weapons of mass destruction began not long after, but did not prevent war. To that extent it is, sadly, out of date. However, the editors and Management Committee feel that it is important to print it as received to make it clear that there was opposition to war on Iraq within the United States, not least from a candidate for the Democratic Party nomination for the Presidency. Also, there is still another viewpoint in that great country regarding its own future and its role in the wider world than that of the present administration.
