Summary

Evaluating venous allograft preservation methods in dogs revealed that cryopreservation in Hanks-solution with DMSO yielded the best results. However, allografts did not outperform synthetic grafts, suggesting limited use for venous allografts without further research.

Background:

  • Venous allografts are crucial for arterial reconstruction but their long-term patency is limited by preservation methods and rejection.
  • Various preservation techniques, including synthetic grafts, fresh venous grafts, and preserved veins, were compared to assess their efficacy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the 6-month patency rates of different venous allograft preservation protocols.
  • To compare the performance of preserved venous allografts with synthetic grafts and fresh autografts.

Main Methods:

  • 162 arterial reconstructions were performed in mongrel dogs using various graft types and preservation methods.
  • Grafts included synthetic (Dacron, PTFE), fresh venous (autografts, allografts), and preserved venous grafts (saline, glutaraldehyde, Hanks-solution with DMSO).

    • Further research involving immunosuppression and antigenic matching is needed to improve viable venous allograft outcomes.
