This study introduces a novel method to eliminate solid waste from pulverised coal combustion (PCC) by adding mineralisers before burning. This process transforms coal ash into a cement-like product, improving energy use and environmental protection.

Area of Science:

  • Materials Science
  • Environmental Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering

Background:

  • Pulverised coal combustion (PCC) generates significant solid residues, posing waste disposal challenges.
  • Current methods for utilising PCC solid residues are insufficient to manage the large volumes produced.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop an innovative technology for zero solid waste generation from PCC.
  • To convert PCC solid residues into a valuable, cement-like product.

Main Methods:

  • Adding quick lime and other mineralisers to coal before combustion.
  • Grinding coal with additives prior to the combustion process.
  • Analyzing the changes in ash mineral composition and properties.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • The addition of mineralisers significantly altered the ash's mineral composition.
  • Formation of cement minerals, such as Belite, was observed.
  • PCC ashes were successfully converted into a material resembling cement clinker.

Conclusions:

  • The proposed method offers a viable solution for zero solid waste generation from PCC.
  • This technology enhances energy utilization and provides significant environmental protection benefits.
  • The conversion of coal ash into a cementitious material opens new avenues for waste valorization.
